Critical Love Theory "Introduction":
There are enough books out there describing how love is just one of our many human emotions. This book is not one of them. Instead, this book seeks to explore the biblical claim that God is Love.
"Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." 1 John 4:8 (NIV)
In my sixty plus trips around the sun and I’m still trying to figure all this out. My Christian upbringing has conditioned me to believe love was something originating from within my soul; just another one of those pesky human emotions for me to tame, exploit and master. But this human-centric idea kept bleeding into my view of God and His Love, so I knew something was still missing.
As a result, I've learned that I need to sometimes capitalize this word to reflect my respect and admiration of God's Love vs our love.
But it has become much more for me; almost like my own personal burning bush; similar to what Moses encountered on Mount Horeb, an in-consumable fire controlling him from the moment he first set eyes on it. Love burns the same way inside my wandering heart and it fuels a fire inside, (a fire not of this world), to share this truth with everyone I meet.
I know now that Love has a name, the name above all names; Jesus Christ. Love also has a voice, and He cries, “Set my people free!” Love may still appear at times to be emanating from within us, but Love is greater than any temporal being.
Love is awesome as God is awesome, sometimes cozy and inviting, other times hard and terribly frightening. Love may become the scariest thing you’ll ever experience. But it’s real, like a piercing light cutting through the darkness. Then, Love becomes the steady voice calling us into His eternal presence. I believe this is why John 3:16 is the most recited scripture of all time.
“For God, so ‘Loved’ the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Love is a mystery, as God is a mystery. Are you ready? Time to take off our sandals; for the ground on which we walk is Holy ground. Let’s explore this incredible word together in a brand new way and discover how little we really do know about Love.
